The Canadian aviation and aerospace industry is currently navigating a period of significant transition and growth. This week in Edmonton, the CCAA (Canadian Council for Aviation and Aerospace) team joined industry leaders and government officials at the Alberta Aerospace & Defence Summit to discuss the path forward. Held under the theme, “One vision. One sky. One mission,” the summit served as a critical forum for aligning regional efforts with national industrial goals.
A Milestone for Regional and National Resilience
During the summit, the Government of Alberta announced a strategic investment of more than $1.2 million aimed at positioning the province as a premier hub for aerospace and defence innovation. This funding is a decisive move to support small- and medium-sized businesses as they scale to meet increasing international demand.
The investment is divided into two primary pillars:
- The LIFT Initiative ($1.05 Million): Managed by the Alberta Aviation, Aerospace and Defence Council, the Leading Industry Forward Together (LIFT) program will provide 40 businesses with the certification support, mentorship, and training required to compete for global defence contracts.
- Foremost UAS Test Range ($200,000): A grant provided to Community Futures Entre-Corp will support a feasibility study to revitalize the Foremost Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Test Range. This site is one of only two in Canada dedicated to beyond visual line of sight flight-testing and is vital for the future of drone technology and commercialization.
Securing the Future of the Workforce
As Canada ramps up its defence spending to meet NATO targets and acts on its Defence Industrial Strategy, the need for a highly skilled, technically mastered workforce has never been more urgent.
At CCAA, our commitment is to those who constitute the bedrock of this industry. We believe that while capital investments in technology and infrastructure are essential, they are most effective when paired with a focus on human capital.
Providing businesses with the resources to upskill their teams ensures that Alberta (and Canada) can maintain operational continuity and a competitive edge in a zero-failure environment. This provincial boost is a welcome contribution to the national talent infrastructure required for long-term industrial resilience.
